GREEK REVIVAL RESIDENCE

LOCATION: DORCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS

This 1875 Greek Revival in Adams Village is my own house, known locally as the Lewis House. I bought it in 2021 and lived with it for a year before touching anything.

The entry sets the terms. A gray and white marble checkerboard floor, black doors and handrail, pink grasscloth climbing the stair hall, a run of porcelain and gilt ceramic pieces up the stairwell by an artist I found in a local Boston gallery. The formal living room carries the same instinct forward: mid-century Italian chairs reupholstered in a moiré fabric, a 1970s lucite cocktail table, a new sofa in silk mohair, a German Biedermeier chest next to a Scandinavian bar cabinet. The eras don't match. They don't need to.

The dining room opens straight into the kitchen. A hand-knotted Turkish carpet in natural dyes set the direction, a round pedestal table, French Art Deco chairs recovered in cut velvet, an English cabinet I've had for years. The layout in the kitchen changed entirely: the sink moved to the island, the range centered on the back wall under a plaster hood, no upper cabinets, walnut and taupe throughout, built to read as an extension of the dining room, not a kitchen.

Upstairs, the primary bedroom is built around a canopy bed, a soft floral wallpaper worked through with birds, a contemporary bench beside antique French Louis XV chairs. The bathroom started with the floor tile, chosen before anything else in the room, then built out around it: a custom vanity, a soaking tub, a curbless shower, English-style brass fittings. The dressing room runs on mirrored storage and a lavender leopard-print ottoman, reupholstered from its original fuchsia, that's followed me since my first apartment in Manhattan.

The powder room, tucked off the entry with no natural light, leans into the dark rather than fighting it: black crown molding, an enveloping foliage wallpaper, an antique French mirror, ebonized wood, unlacquered brass.

Modern kitchen with white cabinets, a marble island, gold fixtures, and wooden bar stools.
Living room with floral wallpaper, pink curtains, window, two vintage chairs with dark blue upholstery, a pink upholstered bench, fireplace with clock on mantel, framed art, small table with flower vase, and hardwood floor.
A bedroom with a floral-patterned wallpaper, beige bed with pillows, a white bedside table with a lamp and vases, and two chairs with cushions near windows with white curtains and brown blinds.
