Greek Revival Residence
LOCATION: AMHERST, NEW HAMPSHIRE This Greek Revival home in Amherst, New Hampshire was carefully restored and selectively rebuilt with the intention of preserving its historic framework while creating interiors that feel distinctive, layered, and expressive. While the architecture remains rooted in the home’s 19th-century origins, the clients sought interiors that were stylish and striking, defined by material richness, color, and finely considered details.
At the center of the home, the kitchen and dining area are defined by a cathedral ceiling that creates volume without sacrificing intimacy. Statement pendant lights are scaled to the space, and Roman shades in a softly patterned fabric introduce color that echoes tones used in the front rooms.
The formal sitting room and library at the front of the house establish the design direction. Refined millwork provides structure, while tailored furnishings, pattern, and color introduce warmth and visual interest.
From these rooms, the plan moves through a walnut bar that marks a shift in material language. Rich wood tones are paired with Cristallo quartzite counters and a full-height backsplash that brings luminosity. Unlacquered brass and glass shelving add depth and reflectivity, while a sculptural pendant and vintage runner reinforce the bar as a richly layered interior moment.
Beyond the kitchen, the plan extends into the footprint of the former barn, now a cozy family room with lower, beamed ceilings. The primary suite above continues the emphasis on craftsmanship, with walls and ceilings wrapped in beadboard paneling. A soft palette of lavender, purple, and gray creates a calm backdrop for hand-blocked textiles and handmade ceramic lamps, bringing texture and artisanal character to the space.
A separate carriage house provides a discreet guest retreat, allowing the property to function as a cohesive whole. This project marked the beginning of an ongoing relationship, with Mandarina Studio later commissioned to design the clients’ Florida residence
